Thomas Kirby
Inspired by the ever-changing translucent qualities of light and its reflection, artist Tom Kirby attempts to capture this fleeting and intangible element in his work. Subtle variations in tone that culminate in vibrant expressions of color come to life in Kirby’s monotypes. The essence of light and its infinite variations are represented in the dynamic layers of color, form and line. Kirby explains, "Light conveys the experience, the transient nature of life. Acknowledging its transience is the way to enjoy it." Citing his Buddhist belief in meditation and transcendence as influential to his artistic study, Kirby attempts to capture not only the effects of light, but also a state of being.
Kirby’s exceptional technical skill derives from an apprenticeship with his father, Thomas Kirby Sr., a well-known Bay Area abstract-painter.
